VLE Acceptable Use Policy

We are pleased to offer all students and staff access to the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). This includes access to forums and 3rd party websites which have been previously checked by staff members before being posted. By logging into the VLE you agree to accept and abide by this Acceptable Use Policy.

The staff at Woodchurch High School strongly believes in the educational value of such electronic services and recognises their potential to support the curriculum. Every effort will be made to provide a high quality experience for students using this information service, however inappropriate and/or illegal interaction with any information service or navigation away from directed links is strictly prohibited.

Please read this document carefully, Listed below are the provisions of this agreement. If any student violates these provisions, access to the VLE will be denied and the student will be subject to disciplinary action.  All VLE activities are audited and monitored by ICT Technical Staff and action will be taken against any pupil that is found acting contrary to this agreement.

Terms and conditions of this Agreement.

1. Personal Responsibility.  As a representative of the school, you will accept personal responsibility for reporting any misuse of the VLE to a staff member. Misuse may come in many forms, but is commonly viewed as any message(s) sent or received that indicate or suggest pornography, unethical or illegal requests, racism, sexism, inappropriate language, posting links to 3rd party websites for non-educational purposes, any use which may be likely to cause offence and other issues described below.

2. Acceptable Use.  The use of electronic services must be in support of education and research in accordance with the educational goals and objectives of Woodchurch High School. You are personally responsible for ensuring that this objective is adhered to at all times. Transmission of any material in violation of any United Kingdom or other national laws is prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to, copyrighted material, threatening or obscene material or material protected by trade laws.

Use for commercial activities by for-profit organisations is not acceptable.

3. Privileges.  Use of the VLE is a privilege and inappropriate use will result in that privilege being withdrawn. Students with access to the internet will participate in a discussion with a member of the school staff as to proper behaviour and use of the facilities.

Access to the VLE is provided to enable pupils to access work and resources from a home computer or device. Access can only be made by entering your account details (i.e. username and password) which will then provide access. You are responsible for keeping these details safe and secure.

Woodchurch High School staff will rule upon inappropriate use and may deny, revoke or suspend usage.

4. VLE Etiquette and Privacy.  You are expected to abide by the generally accepted rules of network etiquette. These rules include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Be polite. Never send or encourage others to send abusive messages.


  • Use appropriate language. Remember that you are a representative of the school. You may be alone with your computer, but what you say and do can be viewed by others. Never swear, use vulgarities or any other inappropriate language. Illegal activities of any kind are strictly forbidden.
  • Ensure your privacy.  Do not reveal any personal information to anyone, especially the home address or personal telephone of yourself or any other students.


  • Protect your password. Do not reveal your password to anyone. If you think someone has obtained your password, contact a member of the ICT Support Team immediately. Remember, you will be held responsible for anything that happens under your account.
  • Messages relating to, or in support of, illegal activities may be reported to the authorities. The exchange of messages with other students other than at the direction of teaching staff is prohibited.


  • Do not create links to external sites such as social networks or sites where comments can be posted and viewed by the general public.
  • Do not upload anything that is not for school/educational use.


5. Services.  Woodchurch High School makes no warranties of any kind whether expressed or implied, for the VLE service it is providing. Woodchurch High School will not be responsible for any damages suffered whilst on this system. These damages include loss of data as a result of delays, non-delivery, mis-delivery or service interruptions caused by the system or elements of the system or your own errors or omissions and any form of malware. Use of any information obtained via the VLE or other information systems is at your own risk. Woodchurch High School specifically denies any responsibility for the accuracy of information obtained via its VLE services and any charges for data incurred if using a mobile device.

6. Security.  Security on any computer system is a high priority. If you identify a security problem, notify a member of the ICT staff at once. Never demonstrate the problem to another student. All use of the VLE must be under your own username and password unless specifically directed by a member of staff. Remember to keep your password to yourself; do not share it with friends. Anyone caught disclosing passwords may have their access denied and will be subject to disciplinary action. Any user identified as a security risk may be denied access to the system and be subject to disciplinary action.

7. Vandalism.  Vandalism is defined as any malicious attempt to harm or destroy any data of another user or of any other networks that are connected to the system. This includes, but is not limited to, the uploading or creation of computer viruses, whether connected to the VLE or not and the deletion of data from its place of storage.

8. Online Ordering Systems.  One of the many facilities available via the Internet is the ability to order goods and services whilst online. It is strictly forbidden for students to use the internet to order goods or services regardless of their nature. In addition it is forbidden for students to subscribe to any newsletter, catalogue or other form of correspondence via the VLE. No Copyright material of any kind may be uploaded to the VLE or sent via the VLE e-mail service.

9. Electronic Mail and Messaging.  E-mail and messaging services are widely available via the VLE. Students are expected to use this facility in a responsible manner. Sending or receiving any message, which contains inappropriate material is strictly forbidden. This includes but is not limited to pornography, unethical or illegal requests, racism, sexism, inappropriate language, any use which may be liable to cause offence. It is also forbidden to send large volume messages (Spamming.). Disciplinary action will be taken in all cases. Always consider the following when sending messages

  • Be brief. Few people will bother to read a long message. Proof read your message to ensure that it is error free and easy to understand.


  • Remember that humour and satire are very often misinterpreted.
  • Cite references for any facts that you present.


  • Respect the rights and beliefs of others.

10. Chat Services.  Students are not permitted to use ANY of the Chat Services available on the Internet.  Use of chat rooms or discussion forums is strictly forbidden.

11.  Photography and Videography.  No un-authorised video or photographs are to be taken or uploaded to web sites.

12. Use of YouTube and Video Streaming Sites. Teachers and pupils may post external links to videos when they are related to teaching and learning. The school filter is set to block such sites for the pupils in school however, these links will be able to be viewed with staff access rights and also where filtering is not applied eg. At home.

The VLE media filter allows movie clips to be posted from sites such as YouTube in a safer manner removing the comments and advertising. Pupils are to watch the clip through the VLE only and not navigate onto the original website.

Woodchurch High School does not accept any responsibility for the views that others post on public social networks.
